In today's educational landscape, online learning has emerged as a powerful tool, offering convenience and accessibility to students worldwide. However, with the rise of technology, educators are encountering a new challenge: students using AI to cheat.

As technology advances, so do the methods of cheating. AI-powered tools and algorithms have revolutionised the cheating process, automating tasks from answering questions to completing entire assignments. These tools can mimic human behaviour and evade traditional detection methods, posing a significant threat to the integrity of online education.

While cheating itself is not new, AI has made the process more accessible than ever. According to a survey conducted in November 2023, 56% of college students admitted to using AI in their assignments. The revolution has already happened, challenging educators to explore solutions to this growing problem.

Mandating supervised exams at institutions or banning AI tools altogether are options, but they come with their own set of challenges including logistical, assessibility and cost considerations - not to mention the impact on the student learning experience. Instead, educators can embrace technology and implement strategies to ensure education outcomes for students.

When prompted, three AI platforms, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude suggested strategies to reduce the negative effects of AI cheating, particularly in online learning platforms. Their suggestions boiled down to :

However, in response to the emerging challenges posed by AI, we have adapted our strategies. This includes the implementation of innovative assessment designs and proctoring tools tailored to combat AI-driven cheating. For instance, we've introduced summative assessments that utilise randomised video responses, ensuring not only the authenticity of student work but also effectively countering the threats posed by AI-enabled cheating

In aiding trainers with the assessment process, we leverage AI technology to transcribe video responses submitted by students. This enables us to streamline the marking process and offer comprehensive feedback on both correct and incorrect responses. By harnessing the power of AI, we ensure efficient and effective evaluation while maintaining the integrity of the assessment process.
