The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence – it is to act with yesterday’s logic

In today's educational landscape, online learning has emerged as a powerful tool, offering convenience and accessibility to students worldwide. However, with the rise of technology, educators are encountering a new challenge: students using AI to cheat. What's your educational provider doing to pivot their product and address this issue?

This article introduces Ammonite's new technology that uses AI to transcribe student video responses.

New methods of cheating

As technology advances, so do the methods of cheating. AI-powered tools and algorithms have revolutionised the cheating process, automating tasks from answering questions to completing entire assignments. These tools can mimic human behaviour and evade traditional detection methods, posing a significant threat to the integrity of online education.

While cheating itself is not new, AI has made the process more accessible than ever. According to a survey conducted in November 2023, 56% of university students admitted to using AI in their assignments. The revolution has already happened, challenging educators to explore solutions to this growing problem.

Mandating supervised exams at institutions or banning AI tools altogether are options, but they come with their own set of challenges including logistical, assessibility and cost considerations - not to mention the impact on the student learning experience. Instead, educators can embrace technology and implement strategies to ensure education outcomes for students.

How do the AI platforms advise addressing the impact of AI cheating

When prompted, three AI platforms, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude suggested strategies to reduce the negative effects of AI cheating, particularly in online learning platforms. Their suggestions included:

  • Assessment Design
  • Focus on understanding and
  • Unpredictable testing
  • Technology
  • Proctoring

In line with Ammonite's commitment to upholding academic integrity, validity, and authenticity have been integral aspects of our assessment design processes since our inception. Our unique assessment engine is a testament to this commitment, prioritising understanding and ensuring assessments that challenge students with unpredictability.

Ammonite's new technology development

Authenticity has always been a cornerstone of Ammonite's approach to assessment. Our use of proctoring technologies has long ensured the authenticity of students undertaking assessments. However, in response to the emerging challenges posed by AI, we have adapted our strategies. This includes the implementation of innovative assessment designs and proctoring tools tailored to combat AI-driven cheating. For instance, we've introduced summative assessments that utilise randomised video responses, ensuring not only the authenticity of student work but also effectively countering the threats posed by AI-enabled cheating

In aiding trainers with the assessment process, we leverage AI technology to transcribe video responses submitted by students. This enables us to streamline the marking process and offer comprehensive feedback on both correct and incorrect responses. By harnessing the power of AI, we ensure efficient and effective evaluation while maintaining the integrity of the assessment process.

Ammonite's new technology development

In this ever-evolving educational landscape, we have a choice: ignore new technology or embrace it and prepare students for success in this exciting new world. At Ammonite, we choose the latter, continually adapting and innovating to ensure the integrity of education in the digital age.
